The hut

RIFUGIO ALFONSO VANDELLI

The hut stands at the center of the northern cirque of Sorapiss, almost on the edge of the rocky base where the waterfall emerges and plunges down. Just a few minutes from the hut, separated by a short hill, lies the wonderful turquoise-colored Lake Sorapiss.

Originally, the hut was located near the lake, built in 1821 by the PFALZGAU section of the DEUTSCHEN und OSTERREICHISCHEN ALPENVEREINES. It was destroyed by an avalanche in 1895 and, rebuilt the following year, was once again buried by snow. After the First World War, the CAI section of VENEZIA promoted a new construction thanks to a donation from member Cesare Luigi Luzzatti. However, a fire destroyed it in 1959. The final reconstruction, dedicated to the President of the CAI of Venice, Alfonso Vandelli, was inaugurated on September 18, 1966.

From the northern glacial cirque originate the waters that feed the wonderful Lake Sorapiss, carved into the rock and lacking surface outlets. Its waters reach the great rocky threshold of the glacial terrace via underground paths, emerging in the loud, high waterfall known as “il Piss.” From this waterfall derives the name of the mountain “Sora el Piss.”
